Mary Berry Apple Crumble with Oats Recipe

Mary Berry Apple Crumble with Oats

This is a traditional apple crumble where sliced apples form the base and a buttery topping made with flour, oats, and sugar is scattered over the fruit. Mary Berry’s style keeps the crumble balanced, ensuring the topping is crisp without being heavy, and the apples remain juicy rather than watery.

Ingredients

  • Cooking apples (Bramley or similar) – 1 kg, peeled, cored, and sliced

  • Caster sugar – 100 g, divided

  • Ground cinnamon – ½ teaspoon (optional)

  • Plain flour – 175 g

  • Rolled oats – 75 g

  • Unsalted butter – 125 g, cold and cubed

  • Light brown sugar – 75 g

Instructions

  • Prepare the apples – Place the sliced apples in a bowl, toss with 50 g caster sugar and cinnamon if using.

  • Preheat the oven – Set the oven to 190°C (170°C fan).

  • Layer the fruit – Spread the apples evenly in an ovenproof dish.

  • Make the crumble topping – Add flour to a bowl, rub in the cold butter with your fingertips until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

  • Add oats and sugar – Stir in the rolled oats and light brown sugar until evenly combined.

  • Top the apples – Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples without pressing down.

  • Bake until golden – Bake for 40–45 minutes until the topping is golden and the apples are bubbling at the edges.

  • Rest briefly – Leave the crumble to stand for 5 minutes before serving.
