Mary Berry Prawn Cocktail Recipe

Mary Berry Prawn Cocktail

Mary Berry’s Prawn Cocktail is a traditional British starter featuring cooked prawns coated in a creamy sauce made with mayonnaise, ketchup, lemon juice, and a hint of Worcestershire sauce. Served on a bed of crunchy lettuce and topped with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of paprika, it’s both refreshing and indulgent.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 400g cooked and peeled prawns (king prawns or cold-water prawns)

  • 100ml mayonnaise

  • 2 tbsp tomato ketchup

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp lemon juice (plus extra wedges for serving)

  • ½ tsp paprika (plus extra for garnish)

  • A pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 1 small lettuce (iceberg or romaine), shredded

  • 1 small cucumber, diced

  • 1 ripe tomato, chopped

  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Sauce

In a mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, tomato ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, paprika, and cayenne pepper if using. Whisk until smooth and well blended. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.

Step 2: Add the Prawns

Add the cooked, peeled prawns to the bowl and gently fold them into the sauce until evenly coated. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 3: Prepare the Salad Base

Arrange shredded lettuce, diced cucumber, and chopped tomato at the bottom of each serving glass or bowl. This adds crunch and freshness to the dish.

Step 4: Assemble the Prawn Cocktail

Spoon the dressed prawns on top of the lettuce mixture. Add a small drizzle of extra sauce if desired. Sprinkle lightly with paprika for color and garnish with fresh parsley.

Step 5: Serve and Enjoy

Serve immediately with lemon wedges on the side. Pair it with buttered brown bread or toast for a classic presentation.
